Confidential Letters of Recommendation

If you prefer your letters of recommendation to be confidential, your recommenders may submit letters directly to the IU ED Careers office to be added to your record.   Please have the writer of the reference state that the reference is confidential, etc.  Confidential Recommendation For ____________________ at the beginning of the reference.  We prefer to receive documents electronically, but we can, if necessary, handle hard copy documents. Please communicate the following to recommenders letting them know they can do one of the following:

• Submit letter electronically
  • E-mail letters to carsrv@indiana.edu
  • Letters should be in pdf format (Portable Document Format) on letterhead with signature  
  • Include name of student in body of e-mail
• Submit letter via US Mail
  • Mail letters of recommendation to:

Letters are open to your inspection according to the Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act of 1974, unless you choose to waive this privilege so that your letters remain confidential. According to the provisions of the Family Education Rights & Privacy Act, you may make an appointment to review non-confidential letters of recommendation if you so desire.

The decision to waive your right to see letters of recommendation is a personal one. You may want to talk to several professors or other professionals about the advantages and disadvantages of this waiver.

Non-Confidential Letters of Recommendation

If you prefer to see your letters of recommendations, have recommenders send letters directly to you. You will then be able to upload these letters directly to IU Education Careers Online after you have completed your electronic profile.
