EFL/ESL Teaching Program

The EFL/ESL Teaching Program is designed for new or experienced teachers to develop and/or enhance expertise in teaching English as a Foreign or Second Language.
Required Courses
1. L540 EFL/ESL Approaches to Instruction and Assessment (3 credits)
This course provides an overview of various approaches to instruction and assessment that incorporates current thinking in the field. Sheltered instruction and content-based models are examples of the instructional models that will be discussed.
2. L539 Language Foundations for EFL/ESL Teachers (3 credits)
The aims of this course are to provide teachers with an understanding of areas in the English language that could be challenging to English language learners (ELLs), and to assist teachers in adapting instruction to address the challenges.
3. L543 Teaching English in Global Contexts (3 credits)
The course will undertake different forms of practitioner inquiry involving systematic, intentional and self-critical inquiry about language teaching in different Asian settings. Specific issues such as teaching English through English (TETE) will be the object of focus.

3. L544 Computer Assisted Language Learning (3 credits)
Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) is intended to give participants a broad view of computer-enhanced language teaching and learning. It will engage participants in exploring a working theory of language learning environments, using and discussing existing and potential applications of computer technology in the language classroom, and creating projects to use and test knowledge gained through reading, discussion, and hands-on experience.
4. L525 Practicum in Language Education (3 credits)
Although content will vary with each instructor, the capstone project generally includes teaching video clips, teaching reflections, standards-based course syllabi, and/or a collection of materials from completed coursework that demonstrate a framework reflective of EFL/ESL pedagogy.
Important Note:
This EFL/ESL teaching certificate emphasizes language pedagogy. The Graduate Certificate in Applied Linguistics (TESOL) has a greater emphasis on the study of language and is available through the Second Language Studies Department at http://www.indiana.edu/~dsls/degrees/cert.shtml
