Qualifying Examination Procedures
Because the School Psychology Program offers a degree in School Psychology rather than Educational Psychology, the qualifying examination procedure is unique to the program. The components are:
- Preparation and presentations of a Professional Development Portfolio
- Preparation and presentation of a comprehensive paper on a research topic of interest that reviews and critiques the current literature. Most often, this paper is linked directly to the proposed dissertation topic.
- Completion of minor examination requirements.
- An oral examination covering any aspects of the student's program, research, and experiences, ase well as an emphasis on ethical and legal aspects of professional practice.
Year III - Summer
- Elective, remaining requirements, or dissertation hours 3-6 hrs.
(Students are strongly urged to complete as much of their dissertation as possible prior to beginning the internship.)
Year IV
- It is strongly recommended that students remain on campus for four years before comleting the internship, especially if an APA accredited internship is being sought. The fourth year gives the student more time to make significant progress on the dissertation and to accumulate additional practicum hours to be competitive in the APA/APPIC internship match process. (For more information on APA/APPIC internships, please go to the APPIC website. The student must have the dissertation proposal approved before going on intership.
Year V
-
Completion of the internship, dissertation, and graduation.
