Registering for Classes
An IU student identification number is required for registration.
That is, only those who are admitted to Indiana University can register for courses.
You will follow the same process for registration as on-campus students except that you must get authorization for each course before registering. The IST DE registration process is as follows:
- Get Authorization: You must get authorization to register for your courses. Email us about the courses for which you wish to register. Note: If you are registering for course F500 or course R503, contact the Distance Education Registration Desk at via email at deregstr@indiana.edu or phone at (812) 856-8481 to receive authorization.
- Register at OneStart: After you have obtained authorization to register from the IST Department, go to OneStart to check your registration time. After login, click the "More" button to find "Self-Service". In Self-Service click "My Registration Appointment". You can register anytime after the posted start time but if you delay too long you may incur a late fee. Check with the Office of the Registrar to find out deadlines for registering or modifying your registration without late fees.
If you are a new student, or if you were not enrolled during the latest major semester (Fall or Spring), you will need to be term-activated before you can register. If you are not sure if you are term-activated, ask the IST office.
Tuition and Fees
All distance students pay in-state tuition rates, regardless of where they live. Rates for the academic year are announced each June (the academic year begins in the Fall). The 2009-2010 in-state tuition and distance education fees are shown in the table below.

$1100.61 |
Note: Don’t be alarmed when you receive your bursar bill. Out of state students are initially charged out of state fees. Your bursar bill will be adjusted after the beginning of each semester (see billing in this section)
Deadlines
IST Distance Education students are subject to the same deadlines as all Indiana University students. The office of the registrar sets deadlines each semester. Check their website at http://registrar.indiana.edu/ to determine registration deadlines.
If you decide to drop a course after it starts, the amount of tuition refund you will receive depends on how much time has passed since the start of the semester.
| Time of withdrawal |

| Withdrawal during first week of classes |
100% |
| Withdrawal during second week of classes |
75% |
| Withdrawal during third week of classes |

For exact dates, see the Bursar's refund policy for the current year.
Billing
Indiana University has switched to all-electronic billing; i.e., YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE A BILL IN THE MAIL, but must look up your account on OneStart. The university bills you depending on the date you register; be sure you have checked the Bursar's website to see when your payment will be due.
For the past two years bursar statements have been available for viewing on and printing from the web through our QuikPAY (QP) application. Students and authorized payers receive email notifications when a new bill is generated and have access to the statements much faster than paper bills are available, providing greater time for remitting payment by the due date (whether paying electronically or by mail). Please refer to the section about QuikPAY on the bursar office website, http://bursar.indiana.edu, for details about using QP for bursar information.
Information on paying your tuition bill is provided at the IU Office of the Bursar's Web site.
Distance students may find that they are charged out-of-state tuition right after their enrollment. The rate will be adjusted by the distance office later. If you don't see the correction by the payment deadline, please contact deregstr@indiana.edu.
