Henry Kerre Wakhungu (Graduated Spring 2004)
I completed my Ph.D. in Mathematics Education at Indiana University in May 2004. I obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and Statistics from the University of Nairobi in Kenya in May, 1983 and a Master’s of Science in Operations Research from Sussex University in England in November 1984. Prior to my doctorate, I was engaged in research initiatives with international NGOs, and served as the Project Biometrician with the World Bank funded Cypress Aphid Regional Project. I also taught in both universities and high schools, including the University of Nairobi, Moi University, Middlesex Polytechnic, and local Kenyan high schools, such as Lugulu Girls Secondary School and Bungoma Boys Secondary School. While undertaking doctoral studies, I was engaged in teaching undergraduate mathematics and mathematics methods courses for teacher education programs at both IU-Bloomington and IUPU-Columbus. My research focuses on beliefs and conceptions of pre-service elementary teachers about mathematics learning and mathematics teaching, and how these beliefs and conceptions are modified as they are inducted into the teaching profession. I am currently working as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Mathematics Education at Indiana University-Purdue University Columbus.
