Shelby Morge (Graduated Summer 2006)
I am currently an assistant professor in the School of Education at the University of North Carolina, Wilmington. I am originally from Brazil, Indiana. (This is a small town northwest of Bloomington) I earned a B.A. in mathematics education with a minor in computer science from Indiana State University in Terre Haute, Indiana. After graduating, I taught middle school math for one semester before moving on to teach high school for four years. At the high school level I taught various mathematics courses and coached the mathematics academic teams. This experience was very rewarding, but also made me realize that there was more that I would like to do in the field of mathematics education. I decided that the Ph.D. program at Indiana University was a great fit for my interests! Upon completion of my Ph.D. in mathematics education, with a minor in mathematics, I accepted a position in the School of Education at the University of North Carolina, Wilmington (UNCW).
At UNCW, I am a member of the Department of Elementary, Middle Level, and Literacy Education. I currently teach the middle grades mathematics methods courses and supervise teacher interns. I also have taught graduate courses in mathematical modeling and mathematics assessment. I am currently a Co-PI on a NSF-funded project at UNCW, Using Squeak to Infuse Information Technology (Use-IT, www.useitproject.org). We are partnering with local school districts to provide professional development experiences for students and teachers in which they will blend the Squeak media authoring took, problem-based learning, and standards-based instructional design. Away from school, I love to spend time traveling, shopping, exercising, and watching sports with my family and friends.
