Rebecca McGraw (Graduated Spring 2002)
I completed my Ph.D. in Mathematics Education at Indiana University in 2002. Prior to that, I taught high school in Bloomington, Indiana and completed my Master’s of Science degree at IU. I decided to pursue a Ph.D. because I enjoyed working with the professors at Indiana University as a Master’s student and secondary mathematics teacher; they provided excellent mentorship to me and encouraged me to consider returning to IU full-time. I was extremely fortunate to have a top-notch mathematics education program right in my backyard.
At Indiana University, I had the opportunity to work closely with professors who were, and are now, engaged in teacher education, curriculum development, and research on the teaching and learning of mathematics. For example, I worked with Dr. Enrique Galindo on the electronic version of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Principles and Standards for School Mathematics. I also worked with Dr. Catherine Brown that involved secondary mathematics teacher education, teacher professional development, and research on these activities. Over the course of my time at IU, I had the opportunity to work on several different projects and to build relationships with many faculty members and graduate students. The connections that the Indiana University faculty have with mathematics educators and researchers across the U.S. and elsewhere were also quite useful – I had opportunities as a graduate student to interact and build relationships with faculty and students from a variety of institutions.
Today, I am an assistant professor in the Mathematics department of the University of Arizona, which is located in Tucson. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about the doctoral program at IU. My contact information can be obtained from my web page http://math.arizona.edu/~rmcgraw/. I still keep in contact with and work with my former professors and fellow graduate students from Indiana. Their support of my professional development began before I entered the program and continues to this day.
