Kelly McCormick (Graduated Summer 2005)
I am Kelly McCormick and am originally from Illinois, but I spent most of my school-aged years growing up in Brownstown, IN. Brownstown is a small town (roughly 3000 people) that is located an hour southeast of Bloomington. I received my bachelor's degree in mathematics in 1997 from Hanover College. After Hanover, I worked for several years as a systems analyst (a computer programmer) for Fifth-Third Bank in Cincinnati, OH. In May of 2001, I received my master's in mathematics from Indiana University. Since that time, I have been working on my doctorate in mathematics education at IU. During my time at IU, I have taught numerous courses both in the mathematics and mathematics education departments. I also taught one year of algebra at a local private school in Bloomington. I am currently working on the TERC project, a project that is evaluating the revised version of the Investigations elementary school curriculum.
Personally, I am interested in identifying how the performances of students (of different racial, ethnic, and SES groups) using the revised Investigations curriculum differ from the performances of students using more traditional curricula in certain mathematical content areas (i.e. number & operations and algebraic reasoning) and with different processes (i.e. solving non-routine problems and story problems). I am also interested in looking at how the revised Investigations curriculum influences race-, ethnic-, and SES-related achievement gaps. In addition to mathematics,
I enjoy spending time outside cycling, running, hiking, and backpacking.
