Guðmundur K. Birgisson (Graduated Spring 2002)

Gudmundur Birgisson is an assistant professor of mathematics education at the Iceland University of Education. He was born in Reykjavik in 1967, and studied philosophy and mathematics at the University of Iceland 1987-1993. He taught mathematics, physics, and philosophy in secondary schools in Reykjavik for several years, and studied Mathematics Education at Indiana University (Ph.D. in 2002). In 1998 he was appointed Assistant Professor of Mathematics Education at the Iceland University of Education where he has taught graduate and undergraduate courses on mathematics, mathematics education and the philosophy of mathematics education. He has also organized inservice programs for mathematics teachers in many parts of the country. He has authored educational software in mathematics, and published web based materials for use with preservice teachers. He is the national representative to the International Commission on Mathematics Instruction, appointed by the Icelandic Mathematics Society, and coordinator of the graduate program in Mathematics Education at the Iceland University of education. He is also a member of the board of the Nordic Graduate School in Mathematics Education. He was elected to the University Council of the Iceland University of Education in 2001, and in 2004, he was appointed dean of undergraduate studies at the Iceland University of Education.
