Fran Arbaugh (Graduated Fall 2000)
I completed my Ph.D. in Mathematics Education at Indiana University in December 2000. Before coming to Bloomington, I taught high school mathematics for 11 years in Chesterfield County, Virginia (just outside of Richmond). During that time I also completed a Master's of Education (M.Ed.) at Virginia Commonwealth University, specializing in Secondary Mathematics Education.
I chose to pursue a doctorate in Mathematics Education at Indiana University for many reasons. First, IU came highly recommended to me by 'people in the know' concerning doctoral programs in Mathematics Education. Second, and something that I did not realize fully until I began my program, the Mathematics Education faculty at IU is nationally known and highly respected in this field. Third, during my pre-admission visit to IU, the faculty was truly interested in me and what I could bring to the program. I left Bloomington after that visit feeling that they respected both my experiences and unique talents, and that I could grow both professionally and personally from enrolling in the doctoral program at IU. Looking back, I can say in all honesty that my time at IU was rewarding professionally and personally.
I am currently a member of the Mathematics Education faculty in the College of Education at the University of Missouri (MU). MU is classified as a “research intensive” university; my job entails research, teaching, and service (40%/40%/20% respectively). My research interests include teacher education (preservice and inservice) as well as teacher learning and change. I work with area middle and high school mathematics teachers in professional development and have crafted research studies around the relationships of teacher learning and teacher change. On campus, I teach mathematics education doctoral students, master’s students, and undergraduate middle and secondary preservice teachers.
