Financial Information

Costs of Attending Graduate School at IU

In 2005-2006, tuition for in-state graduate students is $226.55 per credit hour and tuition for out-of-state students is $659.85 per credit hour. (Students generally take between 9 and 12 credit hours per semester). Most of these costs can be covered by a fee remission (see below). For other costs to consider see an estimate of the cost of attendance at IU.

Graduate Student Academic Appointments

Graduate student academic appointments (Associate Instructor, Research Assistant, or Graduate Assistant) are offered by many academic schools or departments at IU to selected full time graduate students. The stipends for these appointments are considered taxable income. Doctoral students studying mathematics education have found employment as Associate Instructors in the Mathematics Department of the College of Arts and Sciences (teaching courses ion mathematics for elementary teachers), and as Associate Instructors, Research Assistants, and Graduate Assistants in the School of Education (e.g., supervising undergraduate students in field experience or student teaching in local schools, teaching general undergraduate courses fro prospective teachers, or assisting with research projects).

Salaries for 2005-2006 academic appointments vary across the university according to department, but the School of Education is paying about $13,200 per academic year for a full graduate student position (18-20 hours per week). Actual salaries may take the following factors into account:

  1. department making the appointment
  2. responsibilities assigned
  3. personal qualifications and previous experience
  4. educational level of appointee, and
  5. years of experience as a student appointee.
Fee Remission

Graduate students who are employed by the University are granted fee remission awards. Such awards cover tuition for 18-20 credit hours per year (with the exception of approximately $30 per credit hour and other small fees that are not covered).

Graduate Fellowship

A number of graduate fellowships are offered by the School of Education to selected graduate students, according to merit. The stipends attached to graduate fellowships do not require duties and are excludable from taxable income to the extent they are actually used to pay tuition and course-related books and expenses. Graduate students who do well in their studies may find that there are other fellowship opportunities available (on a competitive basis) after their first year of study. Information about other fellowship opportunities can be found on the School of Education Financial Assistance Page and the University Graduate School Fellowships/Funding Page.

Applicants with undergraduate grade point averages above 3.5 and total GRE scores of 2000 or more (old GRE format) may be eligible for a Chancellor's University Fellowship or a Chancellor's Minority Fellowship which pays $17,000 per year and does not require any assistantship during the first year. Additional fellowships may be available to students underrepresented in graduate education.
