Master's Degree: Mathematics Secondary Education Track

The Mathematics Secondary Education track is 36 hours in length and provides extensive professional experience for practicing teachers at the middle and high school levels. Note that the program does not result in teacher certification but, with additional coursework, teacher certification in secondary mathematics can be achieved concurrently with the masters degree. It includes courses from the School of Education and from the College of Arts and Sciences. Individuals who wish to gain teacher certification first and then consider completing a masters degree later may want to select the Transition to Teaching program.

Requirements:
  • General Curriculum (3 hours): Education J500.
  • Special Program Basic Course (3 hours): Education N517 or N518.
  • Specialized Studies (12 hours): Select six hours of 400 level or above mathematics courses. Education N543 is also required of persons desiring junior high/middle school mathematics certification. The remaining 3-6 hours are selected with guidance from your advisor. Selected courses must have a unified focus and be approved by your advisor.
  • Foundational Areas and Inquiry Skills (3 hours minimum): Select at least one of the following Education courses: P507, P510, P516P540, P545, Y502, H504, H510, H520 or H530.
  • Electives (9 hours): These courses must have a unified mathematics focus and the permission of your advisor. You are encouraged to enroll in N543, N590 and/or N716. [Note: N590 may be repeated.]
  • Thesis or Practicum Option (6 hours): Practicum proposals and thesis topics must be selected with the approval of your advisor. Practicums must extend over at least two semesters or one semester and a regular summer session. Six hours of course work may be substituted in lieu of a thesis or practicum with the approval of your advisor.
