Master's Degree: Music Education Track
The Music Education track is 36 hours in length and provides extensive professional experience for practicing teachers at the middle and high school levels. See the Music Education Department in the School of Music for further information on courses in music.
Requirements
- Major (18 cr.): Education J500, Instruction in the Context of Curriculum, Music E516 Instructional Programs and Learning in Music
Choose 9 credit hours from the following:
Music E518 Foundations of Music Education (3 cr.)
Music E519 Psychology of Music (3 cr.)
Music E520 Seminar in Music Education for Master's Degree Students (2 cr.)
Music E521 Children's Chorus (2 cr.)
Music E523 Music in Special Education (2 cr.)
Music E525 Supervision of Music in Public Schools (3 cr.)
Music E535 Measurement, Evaluation, and Guidance in Music (3 cr.)
Music E545 Guided Professional Experiences (1-3 cr.)
Other E-prefixed music education courses may be taken with departmental approval. Graduate music courses that do not have an E prefix may be substituted, with the approval of the director of graduate studies of the School of Music, provided the applicable entrance examinations in music history and literature and in music theory have been successfully completed.

S503 Secondary School Curriculum (3 cr.)
S505 The Junior High and Middle School (3 cr.)
S506 Student Activity Programs (2-3 cr.)
S507 The Teacher and Secondary School Organization (3 cr.)
- Foundations (3 cr.) requirements are the same as for the General Track
- Thesis/Practicum (3 cr.) requirements are the same as for the General Track
- Electives (9 cr.) Courses must complement the student's program.
