A Very Special Movie Night, April 6, 2006

On April 6th, Jeff Rudkin (2005-06 group) presented “The Holocaust” at a School of Education Movie Night. Jeff was joined by one of his former students Brady Jones (now a junior at Bloomington High School South). Brady was one of the students who went to Poland with Jeff for the 60th anniversary of the liberating of Auschwitz. The screening and talk was well attended, attracting a crowd of 40+, made up of students, staff, and faculty.

“The Holocaust” is part three of a nine hour, six part mini-series called "World War II: A Time for Heroes". The entire piece has won two national awards so far - Best of Festival at the AECT International Student Media Festival, and the Crystal Award of Excellence at the Communicator Awards. It is currently entered in seven more contests/festivals. The entire planning and production was completed by students.

The project started in January of 2003 when Jeff took five students to Terre Haute to interview Auschwitz, and Mengele Twin Experiments, survivor Eva Mozes Kor at her C.A.N.D.L.E.S. Holocaust Museum for a media fair project. After a 90 minute interview they were inspired to learn more. Three years later the project is nearing its end with the publication of a 300 page book prepared by the students.

Armstrong Teacher Educators: Updates

The following paragraphs describe recent activities engaged in by a few of the 2003-2004 Armstrong Teacher Educators.

Attilia Gogel worked with Suzanne Sanborn and the Inquiry Learning Forum (ILF) to videotape one of Attilia's inquiry-based lessons with her students. Segments of the videotape will be posted on the ILF website (http://ilf.crlt.indiana.edu/) and ILF members from around the world will be able to review and comment on Attilia's teaching efforts. Early reports suggest that Attilia's lesson was a great success and members of the Armstrong community are looking forward to viewing the lesson in full.

Tracey Kelly is helping to teach a student teaching seminar with Judy Thuer in the Indianapolis area. The seminar is part of an effort by IU Schools of Education to supervise and mentor student teachers throughout the state of Indiana. Tracey works side-by-side with other Armstrong Teacher Educators (past and present) to guide and instruct future educators as they experience the highs and lows of the student teaching experience.

Lisa Powell has been working with Dr. Tom Duffy and the Learning to Teach with Technology Studio (LTTS). Lisa mentioned that she has learned a great deal about on-line learning by taking part in an on-line course through LTTS and then later by becoming an on-line facilitator through LTTS courses. Her LTTS experiences have also taught Lisa more about the process of inquiry, which she says is a "wonderful bonus" for her as an educator in a science and technology magnet school.

Portfolio Assessment Workshop, Fall 2003

On November 7th, the 2003-2004 Armstrong Teacher Educators participated in a professional development workshop on the topic of "Portfolio Assessment." During the morning session, Dr. Ginette Delandshere discussed a recent article examining the quality of evidence in pre-service teacher portfolios. This lecture elicited thoughtful dialogue on current practices in portfolio assessment and strategies for improving this form of evaluation at all levels of education. Following Dr. Delandshere's talk, Drs. Thomas Gregory and Genny Williamson described the use of portfolios in two notable IUB School of Education programs, "A Community of Teachers" and "Teaching All Learners."

Following a working luncheon with IUB faculty, the Armstrong Teacher Educators heard from Shelly Wilfong on the topic of induction teaching portfolios and then Cyndia Moriarty who spoke on teaching portfolios and the national certification process. Dr. Don Cunningham and Suzanne Sanborn concluded the workshop by talking with the Armstrong Teacher Educators about the Inquiry Learning Forum (ILF), a web-based system that connects university faculty, elementary and high school teachers, and university students from around the world.

The next day at the "Call to Teach" event, many of the Armstrong Teacher Educators helped to honor over 150 students who had been accepted into the teacher education program at IUB. The guest speaker for the event was Robert Pickett, the 2003 Indiana Teacher of the Year.
