License Types

Individuals completing a teacher education program and seeking initial licensure after July 1, 2006 are licensed under the licensing framework referred to as Rules 2002. Each license issued under Rules 2002 will include the school setting(s) in which the person will teach and the content field(s) or subject area the person will teach.

No grade coverage will appear on a Rules 2002 license. The school settings that will appear with traditional grade coverage in parentheses are:

  • Early Childhood (Pre-K)
  • Elementary Primary (K-3)
  • Elementary Intermediate (4-6)
  • Junior High/MIddle School (6-9)
  • High School (9-12)
  • All School Setting (k12)

Completion at IUB of:

  • Early Childhood Program leads to two original licenses; one in Early Childhood and the other in Elementary Primary. For both licenses, the content field is Generalist.
  • Elementary Education Program leads to one original license with two school settings: Elementary Primary and Elementary Intermediate. Content field is Generalist.
  • Teaching All Learners Program leads to one original license covering Elementary Primary Generalist, Elementary Intermediate Generalist, Mild Intervention Elementary Primary and Mild Intervention Elementary Intermediate.
  • A Secondary Program leads to one original license covering Junior High/Middle School and High School. The specific content field (e.g. Mathematics, Chemistry) is included on the license.
  • Visual Arts, Music or Physical Education Program leads to one original license in all school settings (Elementary Primary, Elementary Intermediate, Junior High/MIddle School, High School). Specific content field is included on the license.
