For Students: Universal Precautions
Universal Precautions Training will be required prior to your Student Teaching placement. The Early Field Experiences Office, however, would like you to be aware of the risks of handling bodily fluids. Serious risks include exposure to HIV (AIDS), Hepatitis, and other blood born pathogens.
To protect yourself, we encourage you to ask the cooperating teacher how such incidents are handled in the classroom. At the very minimum you should be aware of where the plastic gloves and first-aid kits are in the classroom.
Procedures For Early Field Experience Students
We suggest that early field experience students who encounter bleeding or vomiting students:
- Without touching, try to calm the student needing assistance.
- Look for tissues, hand the tissues to the student, and ask the student to cover the wound or wipe his/her mouth or hands if vomiting.
- Notify the teacher and let the teacher handle the student and the clean up.
OR
You may choose to send another student to notify the teacher, so you can keep control of the situation and prevent other students from coming in contact with bodily fluids.
